Kamagambo Dispensary

The Kamagambo Dispensary provides primary health care to students, staff and the surrounding community. It is staffed by qualified nurses and clinical officers, works alongside the nearby Kamagambo Mission Hospital for cases needing referral, and is part of how the university takes its commitment to physical wellbeing seriously rather than rhetorically.

Services offered

• Outpatient consultation and treatment for common illnesses — malaria, respiratory infections, typhoid and everyday complaints.
• First aid and emergency stabilisation, with referral to the mission hospital where a case requires it.
• Maternal and child health, including antenatal care, immunisation and growth monitoring for the surrounding community.
• Health education and preventive care — nutrition, hygiene, lifestyle disease prevention and reproductive health talks.
• Routine screening such as blood pressure and blood sugar checks.
• Student health records and the medical clearance required at registration.

Health as part of the curriculum, not an afterthought

Adventist education treats physical health as a dimension of education rather than a service bolted on beside it. The Adventist health message — sound nutrition, exercise, rest, clean water, temperance and trust in God — is taught on campus and practised in the dining hall, on the sports field and at the dispensary. Students are encouraged to understand their own health well enough to take responsibility for it after they graduate.

Serving the neighbourhood

The dispensary is not a closed campus clinic. Families from the villages around Kamagambo use it, which keeps the university tied into the community it sits in and gives students in community-service courses a real setting for outreach and practical learning.
