Governance and the Administrative Board

Kamagambo University is governed by an Administrative Board appointed under the Seventh-day Adventist education system, and is regulated by the Commission for University Education (CUE). The board carries responsibility for academic standards, finance, staffing and the university’s spiritual mission, and it is the body accountable for meeting the conditions of the Letter of Interim Authority granted on 15 September 2026.

Who leads the university

Prof. Rei Towet Kesis serves as Founding Principal and Vice-Chancellor. An ordained Seventh-day Adventist minister and a theologian by training, he came to Kamagambo from the University of Eastern Africa, Baraton, where he served as Deputy Vice-Chancellor, University Chaplain, Dean of Men and Associate Professor in the Department of Theology and Religious Studies.

How the board is composed

The Administrative Board brings together the university’s senior officers and representatives of its owning church:

• The Vice-Chancellor, who chairs the day-to-day administration of the university
• The Registrar, responsible for admissions, records and examinations
• The Deans of the Schools of Education, Business and Theology
• The Finance Officer, responsible for budgets, fees and audit
• The University Chaplain
• Representatives of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, which owns the institution

What the board is responsible for

• Academic standards — approving programmes, appointing academic staff and maintaining the quality required by CUE.
• Finance and stewardship — setting fees, approving budgets and ensuring the institution is audited and solvent.
• Mission — keeping the university faithful to the wholistic Christian education it exists to deliver.
• Student welfare — accommodation, health, discipline and the conditions students learn in.
• The path to a full charter — meeting, documenting and reporting the conditions CUE has set.

External oversight

As the holder of a Letter of Interim Authority, Kamagambo operates under the continuing supervision of the Commission for University Education, whose role, in the words of its chairman Prof. James Onyango Owino, extends to “monitoring, guiding, advising and supporting the institution’s development.” The university is also part of the Seventh-day Adventist education network in East Africa and grew into university status as a constituent college of the University of Eastern Africa, Baraton.
